A division of Stanford Outdoor Education, Redwood Outdoors is a student-led program to guide hiking and backpacking trips throughout California. From 2010-2013 I led trips as an outdoor guide, serving as President of the program from 2012-2013 and Financial Officer from 2011-2012. The demand for outdoor trips at Stanford is high – there were over 1000 students on our email list. However, many of our guides graduated, leaving the organization with a high demand and low supply of trips.
As President, I worked to empower the guide community in order to increase the number of trips from the previous year by 200%. I worked with 2011-2012 President Kevin Mori to launch a high-powered guide recruitment program and streamline the application process to quickly develop a new team of guides. I then worked to lower entry barriers by employing a leadership development program that made working with Redwood’s protocol simple, which accelerated guides into becoming effective leaders. Spending the time to develop personal connections and trust among guides encouraged them to take on more responsibility and catalyzed grooming the incoming leadership team.
